A class is more than a collection of abilities: it shapes how you approach a fight and what you can bring to a group. Start with the kind of adventure that sounds fun, then consider the role you would enjoy playing alongside others.

Start with a role

A tank helps protect the group, a healer supports allies, and damage dealers focus on defeating enemies. Some classes can take on more than one role depending on their choices. If flexibility matters to you, look at the Druid, Paladin, Priest, Shaman, or Warrior. Role availability is not a promise of equal performance in every encounter.

Compare by group role

The roles below describe the broad choices Blizzard identifies, not a ranking or a promise of performance. A class with several roles generally needs an appropriate specialization and setup for the role you want to play.

These summaries follow Blizzard’s class deep dives; open each class profile for the individual source and its strengths and tradeoffs.

Think about the moment-to-moment

Do you want to fight close to your opponent, cast from a distance, or travel with a companion? Hunters combine ranged combat with pets; Rogues play around stealth and precise weapon attacks; Mages choose between spell schools. Read the class pages for a starting point, not a ranking.

Check your race and faction

Not every race can become every class. Blizzard’s class and race guide lists the available combinations, including the new options in Forever. If you plan to play with friends, coordinate your faction and ruleset before creating a character.

Leave room to experiment

Class tuning can change. Blizzard’s class deep dives describe beta-era plans, and Worever will revisit detailed recommendations after launch data can be checked. Pick an identity you enjoy rather than relying on an early tier list.
